Project Description
Battery Park Playground
Do You Have A Construction Project We Can Help With?
The Reconstruction and Expansion of the Playground Located Between State Street and Peter Minuit Plaza in Battery Park
Located at the southernmost tip of Lower Manhattan, just steps away from the Elizabeth Berger project performed by DMB, The Reconstruction and Expansion of the Playground in Battery Park is an ongoing project being performed for New York City Parks and Recreation. This project works closely with Battery Park Conservancy to be one of the “largest and most resilient waterfront playgrounds in the city” per NYC Parks Commissioner Michael Silver. This playground sits on 1.5 acres and looks to provide an immersive experience for children of all ages. Focused on sustainability, Warrie Price, President and Founder of The Battery Park Conservancy believes that the Battery Park Playscape “can change the way playgrounds are built and redefine their impact, transforming climate challenges into opportunities for creative play, learning, and the cultivation of the next generation of environmental stewards.”
The Playscape’s design evokes five geographical zones created when water shapes land: Bluff, Marsh, Dune, Meadow, and Riverbed. Each of the zones features unique play elements such as massive granite slides; multilevel, interconnected playhouses, including an accessible treehouse; and an improv/puppet theater.
The Bluff Gardens is set in an elevated hillside which will be home to five custom built Adirondack granite slides of different heights with an accessible ramp and boulder scrambles for the visitors to climb on, all installed by DMB. We will also be installing various size boulders throughout the park, some between water jets providing a refreshing area on a hot New York summer day. Additionally, we will be placing stone seating throughout the Park.
